At the recent developer conference of the Cologne Game Show in Germany, Erik Peterson, who is responsible for business development of the Valve team, shared the latest data on the Steam platform.He pointed out that the number of people online at the same time of Steam has increased from 20 million in 2020 to more than 40 million at present, and the highest number of people playing games at the same time has exceeded 12 million.
Peterson revealed that from 2020 to 2025, Steam's fastest growing markets include Japan, Brazil, China, Germany and the United States.Among them, the rapid growth of the Japanese market is particularly eye-catching, which shows that Japanese players' acceptance of PC games is rapidly increasing.
In terms of Steam user purchase data, from August 1, 2024 to August 1, 2025, an average of 109,000 new players made their first purchases on Steam every day.In addition, in 2024, 543 new games sold more than US$250,000 in sales 30 days before release (including pre-order), of which 224 were more than US$1 million.
Peterson said that although the Steam platform supports 29 languages, more than 66% of players use non-English as their main language, and the simplified Chinese accounted for the highest proportion.
