Recently, Shawn Layden, a former PS executive, was interviewed by foreign media Gamesindustry, talking about the changes in AI to the gaming industry. He believes that the impact of AI on the gaming industry is seriously overestimated, and this emerging technology will not bring about significant cost reductions as some CEOs expect.
"I see a lot of predictions and judgments about how AI will revolutionize the gaming industry, and most of the people who make these views are not game industry practitioners, who believe that AI has ways to accelerate the implementation of certain features," said Laiden.
He continued: "I think the impact of AI on games is just like Excel's impact on CPAs. Using macros to add is indeed better than calculators, but accountants still need to have enough expertise to judge whether the calculation results are correct and how to interpret these numbers."
Leiden also mentioned that many game companies adopt the "outsourcing development" model to reduce costs. "This situation will occur in the early years: outsourcing the game work. In the end, because overseas outsourcing companies and local development teams cannot reach a consensus, it has resulted in nine reworks. It is better to save money as we do it ourselves." The current situation is "the collaboration between the core development team, the technical team of Taiwan, China and the art team of Malaysia, I think it has been constantly optimizing."
Nevertheless, Leden is not sure whether AI and more mature outsourcing development can really achieve cost reduction. In addition, he also said: "Game technology has entered the platform period, so console manufacturers should make consoles cheaper and simpler. At the same time, we must find a way to get more hardware manufacturers to join in."
