V Club has updated Steam's user review and scoring system, and the ratings for "for some games" will be calculated based on the language used by the review.
"When reviews written in a certain language reach a certain number of reviews, Steam calculates review scores for that language. The review scores are displayed to users based on their preferred language. This means that for the same game, some languages may show more positive reviews, while others may show more negative reviews."
This change will cover games with more than 2,000 publicly visible reviews and more than 200 reviews written in at least one language. And hovering your mouse over the "Language" drop-down menu in the User Reviews menu bar will provide a quick and concise overview of game ratings divided by each applicable language. There is also a new language details pop-up option, which displays essentially the same information, but is larger and has a color mark.
New language-specific review scores are enabled by default, Valve says it wants user reviews to be as useful as possible without the need for users to "adjust the various settings provided by the system", but if you don't want to use the new scoring system, you can switch back to full language ratings in Steam settings. As for why this change was made, V said Steam has become a global platform, which means "customers in different regions of the world may have a very different experience of the same game."
