Although the Switch2 handheld mode will support variable refresh rate (VRR) technology, according to the latest exposed developer documentation, this upcoming console will not be enabled in the dock mode connected to the TV.A few weeks ago, Nintendo had quietly deleted the relevant description of VRR in the dock mode from its official website, and the well-known technical analysis team, Shumao Society, confirmed this limitation through developer channels.
Richard Leadbetter, chief analyst at Shumao Society, pointed out in the deep hardware analysis video: "The developer's documentation clearly shows that the current dock does not have VRR output capabilities at all." It is speculated that the problem may stem from two key factors:
Outdated HDMI interface: The DisplayPort to HDMI chip used by the existing dock may not support the standard HDMI VRR protocol
Bandwidth Limit: When outputting 4K resolution, the existing interface bandwidth is difficult to take into account both image quality and dynamic refresh rate
This lack will have a direct impact on game frame rate strategies:
Handheld mode: Can run the "next best frame rate" solution of 40fps/120Hz, eliminating screen tear through VRR
Dock mode: Developers can only choose the traditional solution of locking 30fps or 60fps, and the intermediate frame rate will cause obvious lag
If it is indeed a hardware limitation, Nintendo may need to launch a new version of the dock equipped with HDMI 2.1 interface. However, considering that the company has always opposed creating a fragmentation of user groups (such as the lessons of New 3DS exclusive games), this plan is unlikely to be implemented. The current more realistic expectation is to improve the frame rate stability of the dock mode as much as possible through software optimization.
