Today's Borderlands 4 State of Play live show finally revealed quite a lot of details, although Gearbox still has a hand in planning to hold another in-depth showcase later this year. For this 16-year-old series, its latest game has made some major changes in the game's core elements - shooting gameplay. At first glance, these changes are promising.
Previously, there was news that Borderlands 4 will be released more than a week ahead of schedule. Gearbox owner Randy Pitchford said that this has nothing to do with the release date of publisher Take-Two's heavyweight project "GTA 6".
Borderlands 4 has five returning weapons manufacturers and three new weapons manufacturers, each with its own specialty. Here is the complete list:
- Jakobs: Focus on headshot shooting.
- Maliwan: Can cause elemental damage.
- Vladof: The magazine has a large capacity and the firing rate matches it.
- Tediore: When you throw away the gun while changing the bullet, it will explode.
- Torgue: Specializes in the manufacture of explosive weapons.
- (New) Order: Create a "charge-release explosion" weapon.
- (New) Ripper: Focus on fully automatic shooting.
- (New) Daedalus: "Reliable" and "Easy to Use", supporting multiple ammunition types.
What connects these weapons manufacturers is a new "authorized components" system that sounds a lot like a weapon modification system, but seems to be related to random number generation (RNG)."This system allows features and capabilities from multiple manufacturers to appear on the same weapon," Gearbox explained in the showcase event.
For example, a Vladov rifle is equipped with a Tog magazine, Hyperion accessories and a Mariwan switchgear, "which means it fires fast and can blow things up." It's not clear whether we can customize these parts ourselves, but it sounds like it depends entirely on what the dropped weapon itself has.
This will certainly make countless variations of the same gun more interesting, though.
Gearbox also added: "The more rarity a weapon is, the more parts it can generate randomly, resulting in increasingly crazy loot." "And that doesn't include backup shooting mode, downhill accessories and elemental damage."
Another major change is reflected in the equipment menu. You still have four weapon slots, a reinforcement that takes the position of the artifact and provides "plugs" for weapons from a specific manufacturer or weapons with corresponding parts, but I'm most interested in new ordnance slots.
The ordnance slot is a weapon slot based on cooling time rather than ammunition quantity, where heavy weapons such as grenades and rocket launchers are placed in this slot. This slot may allow the grenade to cool down for a shorter cooldown and have better sustainability, while the rocket launcher or Gatling machine gun that appears in the display will have a longer cooldown, but it is much more powerful.
Although this is not exactly the fifth weapon slot, it sounds very close in actual use.And don't worry about heavy ammunition, you can fire more freely.
As Gearbox said, “No need to leave a powerful weapon until the boss is time to fight. Now you can fry things anytime.”
