The founding team of Sackbird Studios consists of former directors and key contributors to The Elder Scrolls Online, as well as core developers of Project Blackbird. The official said that this is a "developer-first, with long-term development space and a close-knit senior team". The current team size is less than 10 people.

"After working as a triple-A studio for many years, we wanted the freedom to take reasonable risks without having to wait for approvals or chase quarterly goals," Sackbird Studios chief operating officer David Worley said in a press release. "We are completely employee-owned and employee-funded, which means we only answer to those who are passionate about our games."

Lee Ridout, CEO of Sackbird Studios, added: "We are extremely grateful for our time at ZeniMax Online Studios; it shaped us as developers and as people. I was heartbroken to learn that Project Blackbird would be canceled and many people would lose their jobs. We realized that the best way to protect our craft - and our team - was to create a studio where creative independence cannot be compromised."
