"Dune: Awakening" developer Funcom announced that as part of the studio-wide restructuring process, layoffs will be conducted today, and employees who have not disclosed the specific number will lose their jobs.
In a statement, the Norwegian-based developer said the layoffs were part of the restructuring effort, which aims to “release new content, new features and optimize.”
"The transition from the development phase to the long-term operation phase, while preparing for the release of next year's important console versions, requires us to reorganize the team and integrate the resources of each project and studio. Unfortunately, this also means we have to say goodbye to our cherished colleagues."
“Our current focus is to provide these team members with the support and guidance they need, and we will not comment further during this period, so please understand.”
As mentioned and widely reported in the statement, Dune: Awakening was a huge success for Funcom. When the game was released, the Steam platform had about 190,000 players online at the same time, of which about 100,000 were from the higher-priority trial version. In recent months, the number of daily online players in the game has been roughly stable at around 20,000.
Funcom is a studio with extensive experience in both massively multiplayer online games and survival games. It had previously planned to continue to support after the game was released and recently launched its first large-scale free update of the game.Unfortunately, this is still not enough to avoid layoffs.
