“Epic Games Mall now supports pre-loading of pre-order games on PC platforms!” Developer Local Bald wrote in the Epic Games Store forum. “This new feature allows players to pre-order games with encrypted versions of games up to five days (120 hours) before the game is released. The pre-loading feature ensures players can quickly enter the game on the first day of the game’s release, which is especially useful for those games that require a lot of money.”
Preloading is a practical feature, but this type of feature usually has no highlights; the reason why this time is worth paying attention to is because Steam has supported it many years ago. However, although Epic is determined to break Steam's nearly monopoly position in the PC digital gaming market, it has not added this feature to its own store.
And Epic is not unaware of it. The lack of preloading and other inconspicuous but practical functions is a problem. In May, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney and Epic Games store general manager Steve Allison admitted that the Epic store experience was not good—or to the more euphemism of Allison, “We still have a lot of work to do to create a world-class user experience.”
Epic mainly accumulates users for its stores through its extremely generous free game delivery campaign every week. This move has caused the company to invest countless funds, but I can't help but think that the appeal of this (game delivery) has gradually weakened, and it's time to invest some of its resources in the optimization of the store itself. It may sound strange to think of preloading as a major improvement, but it does for the Epic Games store - hopefully, we can see more of these basic features coming soon in the future.
