We rarely have the chance to see the content related to the remake of Star Wars: The Old Republic Samurai, which is reasonable considering the game's bumpy development process. Our first understanding comes from the 2021 trailer, and the second time we stumbled upon a concept picture not long ago.Unfortunately, both of these contents belong to the version developed by Aspyr Studios, which was eventually cancelled.
Currently this remake is developed by Saber Interactive, but it seems unlikely that we will hear anything about this version in the near term. But from a positive perspective, we continue to discover more development materials from the first canceled version. This time the materials include the design drawings of props and weapons, and even a very early playable prototype screen.
The following pictures are from the collection of works by a former Aspyr artist, which mainly displays the weapons and props developed for this version of the game.
According to the artist, some of the props are introductory levels. It is also mentioned that the weapon is designed with a modular weapon system in mind, and players can upgrade the gun by replacing the components. In a picture showing the explosive rifle, we can clearly see an example of this modular system.
In addition to props, the most noteworthy part of the picture collection is a third-person perspective prototype. In the picture, the player character is in a texture-free test environment, holding a vibrating sword - this is a weapon that was found in the original work, and we can see its details more clearly in the other two pictures. At the top of this screenshot, you can see several debug menu buttons for testing animations and items (such as pistols, lightsabers).
There is also an interesting detail in the corner of the screenshot: you can see an option that seems to be used to test the peer function, and the two Mission Vao icons next to it are evidenced by Mission Vao - Mission Vao is a familiar companion character to players of the original "Old Republic Samurai".
While we cannot determine the specific time for the creation of these materials, they may come from versions close to when the project was cancelled. The artist worked at Aspyr until 2022, and Bloomberg reported that the project development has been suspended indefinitely in the same year, so the material may be part of the final result of the remake development process of the remake of the edition.
Although these images may not reveal information too bluntly, they do give us a clear understanding of the level of detail and development goals that Aspyr had planned to achieve in the game. Now, we can only wait and see what development direction Saber Interactive will take for this project, and hope it will be released successfully in the end.
