Yuji Horii, the creator of the "Dragon Quest" series, expressed his views on why Square Enix first released the remake of "Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined" instead of "Dragon Quest 4", "5", and "6".
The official announcement of the remake of "Dragon Quest 7" last week was surprising. On the one hand, the release date of "Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake" is no longer far away; logically speaking, after this, Square Enix should have started to advance the remake of "Dragon Quest 4" - but this is not the case.
Yuji Horii appeared on the live broadcast program of the "Yuubou & Mashirito Broadcasting Bureau" channel and discussed the matter with co-host "Mashirito" Kazuhiko Toshima.Kazuhiko Torishima mentioned that "(remake order) is not 4, 5, 6, but 7", and Yuji Horii responded: "There are many projects currently being promoted, but it just happened that the remake of "7" was completed first."
Kazuhiko Torishima went on to suggest that “this doesn’t mean they don’t plan to remake 4, 5, 6”, but Yuji Horii emphasized “I didn’t say that” three times, trying to avoid further talking about the topic.
Finally, according to RPG Site, Yuji Horii had the following conversation with host Nas Chris:
Yuji Horii: "As I said just now, we hope that these works can be played on the current mainstream platforms."
Nas Chris: "Does this mean that the development of "7" is going smoothly?"
Yuji Horii: "Well, yes, it's been a while since its development...and there is indeed a lot of progress at the moment."
Nas Chris: "For example, "4" has many chapters. Could it be that it takes more time?"
Yuji Horii: "That's it..." (laughs)
All this seems to imply that in the future we may see more remakes of the "Dragon Quest" series - such as "Dragon Quest 4".However, there are no official announcements yet.At present, players can look forward to the release of "Dragon Quest 1&2 HD-2D Remake" on October 30, 2025, and "Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined" on February 5, 2026.
