As the release date of the cooperative treasure-buying shooter "Borderlands 4" approaches on September 12, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford recently revealed that the development team is a little nervous about the difficulty of some links in this campaign mode than the previous work.In an interview, Pitchford talked about the diverse fan base of "Borderlands", some of which are not keen on difficult challenges, and they enjoy exploring the world and experiencing the story.
"We have many players who are not actually interested in deep hardcore challenges, and they prefer to explore border areas or interact with characters." It is precisely because of these players that Pitchford and the Gearbox team are concerned about the extent of the challenges that Borderlands 4 may bring. However, he emphasized that players can temporarily interrupt the main line progress and then challenge the difficult boss after improving their strength through brushing.
"Although it's a bit nervous, the best thing about Borderlands 4 is its RPG feature: you can become stronger through leveling any part you find difficult. When you grow from a rookie to a big shot, the problems you used to be solved. But we did greatly improve the challenge, especially in terms of bosses and combat mechanics."
The decision to increase difficulty stems from the long-term demands of fans of the series for more challenging battles. But Gearbox also ensures that the game will not be too difficult. Creative director Graeme Timmins emphasized that the new work is more inclined to be "casual" rather than "hard-core".
The challenges of higher difficulty are mainly reflected in the final content.Creative Director Timmins talked about the ambitious endgame design of this work in July, saying that the team has accumulated development experience from "Borderlands 3": "I personally attach great importance to the endgame content. In "Borderlands 3", I am responsible for coordinating the endgame gameplay. We are well aware of the needs of community players, and these have been integrated into the game design. For example, the decision-making of the skill tree system considers the balance of future endgame content in advance."
"Borderlands 4" will be available on PC/PS5/Xbox Series X|S platform on September 12, and the Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled to be released on October 3.
