Louisiana sues Roblox for condoning crime

Roblox is perhaps the most popular gaming platform in the world - its popularity is far beyond your imagination. The game "Grow a Garden" on the platform recently set a record of 21.9 million simultaneous online players, leaving works such as "Fortnite" and "Counter-Strike 2" far behind, with the number of players being several times higher than them.Although the app has recently been described as "a hell for children to encounter pedophiles," it has now added a similar "honor": Louisiana, the United States, has announced a lawsuit against Roblox, calling it a "hotbed for sex offenders."

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrier announced the lawsuit through X platform, saying the reason for the game platform was its "lack of safety protection" and claimed it posed danger to children. In most cases, this may sound just an exaggeration that government officials are used to create moral panic. But as far as Roblox is concerned, facts have proved time and time again that such statements are not groundless. But no matter what the facts are, the question remains: what is the actual purpose of this lawsuit?

美国路易斯安那州起诉《Roblox》 称其纵容犯罪行为

“Roblox is full of harmful content and sexual offenders targeting children,” Murrier said, “because it places user growth, revenue and profits above child safety. Every parent should be aware of the clear and realistic dangers that Roblox poses to children so that it can prevent unimaginable tragedies in the home.”

The longer litigation statement elaborates on the reasons for filing the lawsuit:

“Because there is no minimum age limit when registering, no age verification or parental permission is required, users can easily lie about their actual age – which allows pedophiles to disguise themselves as children, and children can bypass any age limit.

After registration, users can access millions of games, covering a variety of genres such as sports, role-playing, navigation, fashion, comedy, etc.But there are some games on the platform that are not as harmless as they appear, such as Escape from Epstein Island, Bragging Daddy Party, and Public Bathroom Simulator: Ambient. These games and other similar works often contain pornography and simulated sexual behaviors, and even scenes of group sexual assault in children.”

Some media have confirmed that players can register at any age of 17 and under without any verification; it is not difficult to disguise themselves as over 17 years old.But there is actually no need to do this, because many games that contain violence and porn are simply marked as "for teenagers", so there is no limit to playing these games at all.

At the end of 2024, Roblox made some tweaks, adding some new feature options for parents, allowing them to ban children under 13 from using in-game chat features and preventing children under 9 from getting exposed to teenage content.Even after these adjustments, there is still no mechanism that prevents 13-year-old children from getting in touch with adult content, nor can they restrict their unmonitored text communication with anyone.

Teenagers’ privacy and online communication are extremely difficult and complex issues that every family needs to deal with. But the survey shows that even if the user logs into an account under 13 years old, there are still groups on Roblox that "publicly trade child pornography and induce minors to have sex."

Obviously, most of the 80 million users who play Roblox every day have never encountered any problems, even if their precious youth may be wasted on memes such as "Italian brain corruption".

What exactly this special lawsuit aims to achieve is worth paying attention to.At the moment, it looks more like an eye-catching farce than a practical action.
