Sony: Service-based games will continue to be done, although it is not going well at the moment

Sony's chief financial officer said the company will learn from the failure of its service-oriented games, emphasizing that despite the problems, it will continue to move forward.

During the Q&A session after the company's latest financial report, investors asked Sony executives' team, hoping to learn about PlayStation's current live service game development plan and what problems are facing in improving such games.

Sony's chief financial officer Lin Tao said that although there are many negative comments on Sony service-oriented games due to the problems of "Agents of Star" and "Marathon", she still believes that such games are worth investing in because they bring the company a new source of revenue that did not exist five years ago.

"Last year, the Agents of Stars were terminated and this year's Marathon was postponed, so the recent news is indeed a bit negative," she said through an interpreter.

"But if you look back at the last five years, there were almost no service-oriented games in PlayStation Studio five years ago. Now we have "Jidi 2", "MLB: The Show", "GT Racing 7", and Bungie's "Fate 2", which are steadily bringing us sales and profits."

Lin Tao also mentioned when the financial report was released that service-oriented games accounted for about 40% of Sony's first-party software revenue in the last quarter, and she emphasized this again in her answer.

"The proportion of service-oriented games in the first quarter was about 40%, and it is expected to be slightly lower for the whole year, possibly between 20% and 30%. So from a transformation perspective, the process is not completely smooth, but it does change from a longer-term five-year perspective."

“Of course, we also realize there are still many problems to be solved, so we have to learn from past mistakes to make sure that we can reduce waste and make the process smoother when launching service-oriented content.”
