Sega's first quarter financial report for fiscal year 2025 Persona mobile game performance exceeded expectations

Today, Sega announced its financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (April to June 2025).

According to the documents provided by the company, the company's net sales were 81.026 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 22.7%.

The company suffered an operating loss, recording an operating loss of 519 million yen.

Nevertheless, net sales were in line with expectations and operating losses were smaller than expected.

Let’s look at the “entertainment content business” covering the electronic game business: net sales were 67.7 billion yen (72.5 billion yen in the same period last year), and operating profit was 7.1 billion yen (11.8 billion yen in the same period last year).

The financial report shows that the free game "Persona: Phantom of the Night" has performed "exceeded expectations", with the number of first-time posts exceeding 1.5 million times.

The newly launched buyout games and other free games performed in line with expectations, but the repetitive sales performance of old games and Rovio business performance were weaker than expected.

It is worth noting that Sega mentioned that it plans to create a virtuous cycle of IP value improvement through a cross-media strategy.

"Looking forward, the Group will implement a cross-media strategy aimed at building a virtuous cycle of IP value improvement and revenue growth. This includes enriching IP portfolios around the world (such as the "Sonic" series), and carrying out game sales and service provision, animation production and character licensing businesses."

In addition, Sega plans to invest more than 120 billion yen (about 815 million US dollars) in the consumer business sector (consoles and PC games) in the next three years.

Among them, more than 90 billion yen will be used to strengthen the core IP development of Japanese studios, and more than 30 billion yen will be invested in the revival of classic IP and the highly anticipated "super game" project.

More than 80 million yen were reserved for strategic investment during the same period to establish new growth pillars, including mergers and acquisitions that may be carried out around consumer and gaming businesses. It should be noted that the "consumer business" mentioned above refers to the host and PC games, while the "game business" here specifically refers to the casino gambling machine business - this is a special expression in Japanese business terms.
