After a fierce legal battle over IP ownership on Friday the Thirteenth, the series finally ushered in new progress. It's been 16 years since the 2009 reboot of Black Friday, and now Jason Voorhees is finally back on the big screen — and our consoles.
A special seminar on "Jason Universe" was set up at the San Diego Comic Exhibition in the United States. At the meeting, the official announced that it would launch a new movie that was 16 years later and develop a sequel to the 2017 "Friday 13th Game Edition".
There aren't many details about this sequel, but Horror Inc.'s vice president said the game is one of the company's current priority projects, so we're expected to hear more about it soon.
"I can tell you that a new sequel movie and a new sequel game are our top priority right now. That's where most of our energy is put into it. I can tell you clearly that we are finally able to deliver on this promise. Although we won't officially announce it with our partners today, both are in production and are coming soon."
The first Black Friday 13 film directed by Sean S. Cunningham, released in 1980 and was a great success—and thus opened a series including 12 movies, multiple games and a TV series (a new drama is also in preparation). The 2009 reboot, starring Jared Padalecki and Danielle Panabaker, aims to reactivate the series for modern audiences.Although the film became the second highest-grossing work in the series, it has received unanimous negative reviews from the media and fans.
The 2017 "Friday 13th Game Edition" started with crowdfunding and later developed into a complete multiplayer online game. However, due to litigation issues surrounding the IP, the game stopped updating in 2018 and shut down servers completely in 2020.
However, for the upcoming sequel, fans have called on developer Illfonic to switch to single-player plot games and invest in a higher production budget. The development team is also very clear about the players' calls, so it may not be difficult to create a single-player experience with narrative as the core and bloody and exciting.
