At the Sony Games and Network Services Department Conference, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) CEO said that the price of the subscription service PlayStation Plus will continue to adjust, pointing out that although PS Plus has increased its price, subscribers will continue to choose higher-level subscription services.
In its latest business unit meeting, Sony pointed out that the proportion of PlayStation Plus's higher-level subscription users continued to grow in fiscal years 2022, 2023 and 2024.
"More and more subscribers choose our Premium and Extra levels, which currently account for about 38% of the total subscribers," said Hideaki Nishino, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The chart shows that in fiscal 2022, 17% of PS Plus subscribers chose the Premium level and 13% chose the Extra level, while in fiscal 2024, the two ratios rose to 22% and 16% respectively.
Hideaki Nishino further explained the situation and talked about the increase in the subscription fee for PlayStation Plus.
“PlayStation Plus is popular with players and continues to increase player engagement. We have seen a trend for players to prefer higher-level services, which can be seen from our subscriber distribution in fiscal 2024 that about 38% of players are now subscribed to the PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra tier.”
“Even though we implemented global price adjustments in fiscal 2023, and recently local price adjustments have been made in some countries to optimize our pricing strategies in some market groups and take into account the impact of foreign exchange volatility, this trend remains.”
“These price adjustments are partly due to our increasing value for players, including our continued increase in content quality and diversity, as well as investment in service features such as personalized player experiences and more optimized content discovery capabilities.”
“PlayStation Plus offers great value to players and we will continue to add more value and adjust our pricing strategies dynamically to maximize profits.”
In September 2023, Sony raised the price of its 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription in some regions by up to 35%, with the price of Premium members rising from $119/£99 per year to $159/£119.
