SIE: First-party game porting to PC will continue to be "cautious"

In order to balance expanding the player base and maintaining the value of PS5, PlayStation will continue to be "thoughtful" and "careful" on choosing which games to port to the PC platform, Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation studio.Hulst also said Sony wants to ensure the best experience for the PS5.

Sony has been porting its first-party games to the PC platform for some time.Unlike Xbox, however, Xbox’s PC and console versions are released simultaneously, while Sony’s non-online service games such as God of War 5: Ragnarok and Marvel Spider-Man 2 are usually ported until at least a year after the PS5 version is released.

In the past, Sony has expressed hope to be more active in porting PC versions. However, Hulst said at a Sony business unit meeting on Friday that in order to maintain the value of the PS5 console, Sony will continue to remain conservative in terms of multi-platform issuance.

Asked about the industry trends in the company’s shift to multi-platform gaming and how Sony will protect the value of PlayStation consoles, Hulst said: “You’re right, we’re constantly exploring new ways to get players into the game series. It’s important to realize that in order to reach a new audience, we’ve thoughtfully and taken a very cautious, very careful approach to moving the game series from console to other platforms. Especially when it comes to single-player games, our staple games are so different.

What makes PlayStation hosts unique is that they will demonstrate the performance and quality of the hardware. Therefore, we want to make sure players get the best experience from these games. We consider very carefully how and whether to introduce these works to other platforms.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino said SIE will continue to monitor players’ patterns and behaviors to “make sure we provide them with the right services.”

The executive was also asked about Microsoft's move toward multi-platform issuance and whether he thinks it's a good thing. He replied: "We believe that industry competition is benign and drives our innovation. Multiple players are driving the growth of the entire gaming industry together, and while new engagement models are being explored, we ultimately think that this is a good thing. However, as I mentioned earlier, we are confident in our current strategy and committed to it, and we don't have a desperate need to transform."
