Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said that the official development of the Switch 2 began in 2019, two years after the Switch was released.

"We started developing Switch 2 as an official internal project around 2019, but if basic technical research is included, the research and development of new hardware has been in progress."

Furukawa also said:

The goal is to create "more powerful hardware" to improve processing performance and enable software developers to "propose new ways to play"

The basic concept is that we believe that "hardware must have sufficient performance to support software developers to propose new gameplay ideas."
