Recently, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of publisher Take-Two Interactive, said in a media interview that technically, R Star actually launches "several" new Grand Theft Auto games every year.
Zelnick explained that this phenomenon is rooted in the past decade that R Star’s main contribution to the Grand Theft Auto series is mainly achieved through the continuous update of the online mode of Grand Theft Auto.He compared this model to an era when the Internet was not yet popular—in which time, once the game was released, the studio would quickly turn to the development of new projects.
"Remember the days of the past? At the best, it was the golden age, at the worst, it could be the dark age. Our working mode was to develop games, release games, expect success, and then start developing the next one. Now, players can continue to experience our popular works through scalable content or multiplayer modes. Taking the Grand Theft Auto series as an example, we continuously enhance the player's gaming experience by continuously operating the Grand Theft Auto online mode and providing content updates. Some of these updates were so large that they could be released as a game 15 years ago."
Zelnick further emphasized: "It can be said that R Star actually launches several new works of Grand Theft Auto every year. The same is true for the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2, and these two online games continue to maintain strong vitality. The latest financial report shows that their market performance has far exceeded expectations. Online modes such as the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series have successfully extended the retention time of players from the original few months to nearly the whole year."
Since "Give Him Love 5" was released, R Star has only released the work "Red Dead Redemption 2" in 2018.However, the studio has fully launched the highly anticipated development of "Grand Theft Auto 6" since 2020.During this period, the series also released "GTA: Trilogy - Ultimate Edition", which includes three works: Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Sin City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
