On May 2, 2025, Nintendo released a new firmware update for the Switch host, version number 20.0.1.This is to respond to feedback from the majority of users. The previously released version 20.0.0 update has caused serious system errors. The main purpose of this subsequent update is to fix a serious bug, which triggers the error code 2206-1015, and in some cases, the affected host cannot restart normally. This issue has caused widespread concern among the player group, and many users are worried that their host has become bricked.
Version 20.0.0 was originally released to improve the overall stability of the system, but shortly after it was released, there was feedback from users saying that their system became unusable. One user reported that he encountered an error code 2002-4687 immediately after the update, and even after trying all recommended troubleshooting steps, including removing the microSD card, formatting the storage device, and soft resetting and full system reset through recovery mode, the host continued to boot failed.Another user described that despite attempting forced shutdown and restart, the host was stuck in an infinite error loop containing error codes 2206-1014 and 2206-1015.
Nintendo has acknowledged this issue and encourages affected users to install version 20.0.1 through maintenance mode. When starting the system, press and hold the power key and the volume key at the same time to enter maintenance mode. This mode allows firmware updates to be applied without starting the normal operating environment, which is especially useful for hosts that cannot be started properly.
Nintendo Switch System Update 20.0.1 Patch Description:
Version 20.0.1 (released on May 2, 2025):
Fixed an issue where error code 2206-1015 sometimes occurs when restarting the system after updating to system version 20.0.0.
It is recommended that users who encounter this problem update their hosts through maintenance mode.
While the new firmware appears to solve the most severe failure introduced in version 20.0.0, it is still unclear how many devices were affected until the fixes were introduced. At present, Nintendo has not announced whether it will provide further compensation or repair services to users whose hosts are still unavailable.
