Recently, Shawn Layden, former Sony PlayStation president, was interviewed by Save State Plus. He revealed that the main reason for his resignation in 2019 is that he disagrees with the company's strategy to turn to a "service-based game".
Layden admitted that his expertise is to create stand-alone works with rich plots, and as Sony shifts its focus to online service games and subscription-based businesses, he realizes that his philosophy is no longer in line with the company's future development direction.
"When I saw the company's strategic shift, I started to look back at my career at Sony and thought it was the right time to leave," Layden said, and Sony's service-based gaming transformation was not going well.Sony had planned to launch 12 service-oriented games by March 2026, but canceled 6 under development projects in 2023.
"Star Ming Special Attack" launched in 2024 was closed in less than two weeks of operation, while "Jedi 2" set a sales record, in sharp contrast. Two more games have been cancelled this year, with only Fairgame$ and Marathon remaining.
