Nintendo has achieved great success in the movie field with "Super Mario Bros. Movie", which has a global box office of more than 1.3 billion US dollars.Today, Nintendo is preparing to launch "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in 2026, followed by the "Legend of Zelda" live-action movie in 2027.There may be more movies based on Nintendo IP in the future, and the company has now stated that film production is an area that Nintendo "wants to be more actively involved in going forward."

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said in the latest financial report that Nintendo is keen to get involved in film production because the company believes that movies can become a long-term asset for the company when focusing on future development beyond games.
Nintendo has a division within it called Nintendo Video Studios, which is experimenting in the video space, including the recent Pikmin animated short. But future feature-length films will not be handled by Nintendo Video Studios—the work will be left to established Hollywood studios such as Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment.
"In the film field, a mature business framework has been formed in which distribution companies are responsible for film operations. Past experience shows that by following this established model and carefully creating content, profits can be achieved." Shuntaro Furukawa said.
Shuntaro Furukawa said that Hollywood is a complete system with a "mature business model", and Nintendo Video Studio, as a newly established department, is trying to meet various challenges in "fields that have not yet formed a clear form."
"The recently launched "Pikmin" themed short film "Close to You" is an experimental work based on this concept. We hope to continue to provide this type of content that can trigger a global craze and develop it into an important asset for Nintendo." Shuntaro Furukawa added.
Currently, Nintendo has not announced any other movie plans besides the "Legend of Zelda" live-action movie, but there are already rumors about the "Donkey Kong" movie.
Nintendo also recently talked about its overall philosophy on filmmaking. The company said it would not simply license IP to movie studios, but would participate in financing and be "deeply involved" in the production process. For example, Shigeru Miyamoto served as the producer of "Super Mario Bros. Movie" and will also serve as producer of "Super Mario Galaxy Movie" and the "Legend of Zelda" live-action movie that has just started filming in New Zealand.
"Super Mario Bros. Movie" has a global box office of US$1.36 billion, ranking second on the global box office list in 2023, second only to "Barbie"'s US$1.44 billion, and ranking 18th in the global box office in film history.
"Whether it is players who have experienced Mario games, people who are not familiar with games, or audiences of all ages from children to the elderly, they all love this movie." Nintendo said, "Compared to quantifiable achievements, what makes us more gratified is that we have received warm comments from many viewers."
