While the game's opening sequence was already pretty brutal, the Rockstar co-founder revealed that the original version was so brutal that they had to cut it because people would hate Arthur from the start of the game.

In a recent episode of Lex Fridman's Podcast, Dan Houser spoke candidly about his creative process on Red Dead Redemption 2.He said that in the original setting, Arthur Morgan was "very, very cruel" and in some ways too intense.

"In the original version of the game, [Arthur] had a baby that had just died, and we cut that out - which was the right decision. It made him look very, very cold in the opening scene."

At the beginning of the game, Arthur was originally set to be a father who had just lost his child. He was also not considerate of his "occasional girlfriend" (the child's mother). This makes his character seem so cold that players will hate him from the start.

Houser said that from a certain perspective, this setting could have made his "redemption arc" more dramatic, but it also made him too cruel for players to empathize with.In the final version, they made Arthur more likable.

However, he also said that the final product is "what it is destined to be", and the "setting of Arthur unable to face his emotions" in the original version was what he liked very much at the beginning.
