The original author of "The Witcher" did not participate in the development of "The Witcher 4" CDPR

"The Witcher" novel author Andrzej Sapkowski recently said that he currently has an "excellent" cooperation agreement with "The Witcher 4" developer CD Projekt Red, but CD Projekt Red almost no longer consults him.

Sapkovsky spoke to GamesRadar+ at the launch event for his new novel, Crossroads of Ravens. When asked if he had any involvement in the development of The Witcher 4, he said he was not involved in the new game's creation - which may be part of the reason why he recently criticized a certain "narrative inaccuracy" in the series.

While Sapkovsky isn't directly involved with The Witcher 4, he still seems to be benefiting greatly from the series' continued success. He said: "The contract between me and the game is very good now, and I hope it will stay like this."

However, this wasn't always the case.As early as 2019, CD Projekt Red reached a settlement agreement with Sapkowski - according to Polish copyright law, if the revenue from licensed works far exceeds expectations, the copyright holder has the right to request additional remuneration.Due to the huge success of "The Witcher 3" and the meager licensing fee that Sapkovsky originally received, he claimed about $16 million in royalties from CDPR.

Sapkovsky also mentioned that he has had a closer relationship with CD Projekt Red in the past.In the early games in the series, the development team occasionally consulted him for world setting or story details. But now, he says it's "very rare."

This may be because CDPR has built stronger confidence in this series - after all, they have created multiple games around this world over the years; on the other hand, many game content itself is also original to CDPR.Sapkovsky has said that it would be "almost impossible" to write a sequel due to the ending of his original novel, but the game's story apparently takes place after the novel's final ending.
