The boss of Gearbox made another crazy statement: There is no masterpiece in the gaming industry so far

Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford recently spoke to Shacknews along with several other colleagues to discuss the development of the studio's latest game, Borderlands 4, which releases on September 12 this year.

Gearbox老板又出神言论:游戏行业至今都没有一个杰作

At the end of the 73-minute video, Pitchford details what it takes to make a massive video game like Borderlands 4.Interestingly, he went on to add that the gaming industry as a whole is just getting started and is still "exploring" video games and has yet to have its "Citizen Kane" moment.

He said: "Making a game like Borderlands 4 requires a huge investment. It is a very large game that took hundreds of people years to complete. It is very expensive. The budgets of large-scale video games these days even exceed the budgets of blockbuster movies. Whether you are a deep-pocketed person or any member of the team, it is difficult to easily decide to devote so many resources to a cause.

This is only possible if everyone in this circle believes that the value of the imagined thing is greater than the cost of creating it.This means that you both need to know what it takes to create it, you need to believe what it takes to create it, and you also need to know how much it will be worth once it is created.Everyone has to have this understanding or it won’t work.I’m glad that I’m in it and I’m glad that we’re just getting started. And when I say "we," I mean the entire industry.Like, we don't even have Citizen Kane yet, let alone Jurassic Park or Star Wars. We're still figuring it out.But it's fun."

Randy Pitchford was referring to Orson Welles' Citizen Kane movie.Released in 1941, the film is considered the first true masterpiece in film history and one of the best films ever made.

While Pitchford's point that "games haven't matured like other entertainment mediums" may have merit, it's been 54 years since the first commercial game, Computer Space. Many players will believe that the game medium has already given birth to many "Citizen Kane" of its own. From the perspective of evolution speed, games are developing even faster than movies. Now, it is film and television companies that are vying to buy the rights to adapt games, not the other way around.
