The director of "The Matrix" once invited Kojima to develop a game version, but Konami rejected it

There's no doubt that The Matrix series has been poorly adapted in the realm of video games, even though it's a theoretically perfect fit for the medium.

In the 26 years since the first movie was released in 1999, we've only gotten two decent games: 2003's single-player action-adventure game "The Matrix: Enter the Matrix" and 2005's massively multiplayer online game "The Matrix Online".As for the recent interactive experience "The Matrix Awakens", although it was released at the end of 2021, it is essentially just a technology demonstration showing the Unreal 5 engine, allowing fans and players to see the quality that the "Matrix" game should have achieved, but has never really been achieved.

This also makes the recently exposed news even more embarrassing: legendary Japanese game producer Hideo Kojima was once invited to produce a "Matrix" game, but Konami rejected it.

This was revealed by Christopher Bergstresser in an interview with Time Extension. He served as Senior Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development at Konami from 1996 to 2002.

Bergstrasse recalled that this scene happened on August 25, 1999, the day "The Matrix" premiered in Japan. The Wachowskis were fans of Hideo Kojima's work, and when they met him they invited him directly to make a "Matrix" game. However, Konami CEO Kazumi Kitaue at the time allegedly rejected the proposal on the spot.

Bergstrasse said: "The Wachowski brothers are loyal fans of Kojima. That day at Konami headquarters, President Kitakami, Kojima, and Akira Saito (Aki Saito) who still works with KojimaSaito and I were there. At this time, we got a call from the Wachowski brothers, who wanted to visit Kojima in person. So the brothers came with the concept artist and said directly: 'We really want you to do the "Matrix" game, okay?' Saito translated this to Mr. Kitakami, and Kitakami just looked at them and said, "No."But we ended up going to the Japanese premiere of "The Matrix" and attending the party afterwards."

Time Extension also stated that they also checked with another former Konami employee to confirm this matter. The employee revealed that Hideo Kojima still showed strong interest in this cooperation after being rejected-perhaps he also tried to persuade senior management to approve the project, but unfortunately it failed in the end.
