This year is of great significance for the Descent Light series.The open world zombie game series is celebrating its tenth anniversary, and developer Techland has prepared several projects for this.This includes a visual and audio renovation update carefully created for the first work in the series, the free update called Dying Light: Retouched and will be released today (June 26).
"One of the biggest benefits of using your own engine development is that the engine development team is right next door to us," Techland explained in his blog."Over the past few years, we've added and customized a lot of content and learned how to better extract the potential of existing technology. One day, someone started applying this experience to some old resources - we suddenly realized we could do it for the entire game."
Therefore, players can expect improvements in texture resolution and quality, as well as improvements in lighting effects and physical rendering based improvements.Techland also promises a new 8K super high shadow quality and offers players with the corresponding hardware a higher level of maximum detail (LOD) option, meaning the finest resources in The Deserted Light are now visible over a longer distance.
In terms of audio, original composer Paweł Błaszczak re-recorded the soundtrack of "The Deserted Light" for this update, while "integrating" new tracks and ambient sound effects throughout the game.In addition, the battle "significantly strengthened...shock feedback sound effects" are said to sound "more satisfying and more impactful".
However, Techland strongly stressed that the "Disappearance" update focuses on "enhancement" rather than "not a complete remake or reproduction".At the same time, the "level of improvement" that players can experience will "varied from platform to platform".
It is worth noting that the update will not be available on the original Switch platform – which once received an impressive ported version of the Deserted Light in 2021.Techland has confirmed with IGN that the update "will not" log on to Nintendo's platform.Don't expect Switch 2 version, either, because Techland says "there is no (release) plan at the moment."
