The rumored PlayStation handheld will support AI stretch technology (PSSR), and some of its specifications will make up for the shortcomings of lower memory bandwidth compared to the basic PS5.
KeplerL2, a well-known AMD whistleblower, revealed some more information about this long-rumored handheld on the NeoGAF forum, revealing that the AMD APU that drives the handheld will be the only APU that supports AI stretching technology in the near future.
The whistleblower also added that this handheld console will be equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5X memory. Although it will take a few years to launch, because LPDDR6 is not yet mature, it still uses LPDDR5X, and the memory bandwidth is only one-third of the basic PS5, but it will be equipped with more caches and has improved memory compression functions.
When clarifying the cache configuration that PlayStation handheld has, KeplerL2 confirmed that it will be equipped with 4MB of L2 cache and 16MB of MALL cache, while the current generation of systems do not have the latter. In terms of handheld machine architecture, he reiterated that both PlayStation handheld machine and PS6 will be based on a branch of the gfx13 (also known as RDNA5/UDNA) architecture.
PS handheld configuration organized by Zuby_Tech:

LPDDR5X 16GB memory
36 computing units
AMD UDNA architecture
Memory bandwidth 149GB/s
L2 cache 4MB
Unlimited cache/MALL (Memory Attached Last Level) cache: 16MB
Although rumors about PlayStation handhelds have been circulating for a long time, Sony has not disclosed any relevant information. However, last week, it was reported that the PS5 and PS5 Pro will soon obtain a low-power mode that can reduce performance while saving energy. The media interpreted it as a performance profile for this unreleased handheld console.
Although Sony has not confirmed whether it is developing a PlayStation handheld, Microsoft has clearly expressed its ambition to enter the handheld market at this year's Xbox game launch conference - officially launching the handheld ROG Xbox Ally with a distinct Xbox style.
It is also reported that Microsoft was developing a complete handheld system, but the plan has been stopped and instead focuses on improving the gaming performance of Windows 11 on the handheld platform, because its performance is still lagging behind SteamOS.
