Sony confirmed for the first time that the number of monthly active players on PS5 has now exceeded that of PS4.
At the Sony business unit meeting held in May last year, SIE pointed out that the number of monthly active users of PS4 and PS5 is about 49 million, a half to half. This year SIE also held a similar meeting, and now the new slides no longer show exact numbers, but clearly shows that the PS5 shares are larger than the PS4.
SIE also noted that the total number of PlayStation's monthly active users was 124 million, compared with 97 million in the report last year.
SIE President and CEO Hideaki Nishino said at the meeting:
“PS5 provides players with the best way to experience our content, so its player base continues to grow. These players are highly engaged and spend more on content and services than previous generations. However, PS4 remains an important entrance for existing players to experience our content and services and we will continue to work on them.”
At the same meeting, Hideaki Nishino pointed out when discussing the upcoming PS6 console that Sony's console business has developed into a "multi-faceted platform", and a considerable number of active users are still playing games using PS4.
“We now have a huge ecosystem of players with two generations of highly invested players, PS5 and PS4. So it’s natural for everyone to be very interested in our next-generation console strategy. While we can’t reveal more details at the moment, the future of the platform is our biggest concern. We are committed to exploring a whole new and more powerful way to let players interact with our content and services.”
Last year, Nishino said that the number of monthly active users of PS4 and PS5 accounts for roughly half of each, but he expects PS5 to surpass the previous generation of PS4 soon.
