"Meteorological Archives": Game innovation empowers new ways to understand climate change

At the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) was invited to work with the United Nations to join the Playing for the Planet Alliance to jointly address the challenges of climate change. The alliance brings together many industry leaders and is committed to achieving the sustainable development goals.Since then, we have carried out a series of initiatives to fully support the Alliance's goals.Today, to continue to fulfill this commitment, we are proud to launch the latest project - The Meteorological Archives.

The Meteorological Archives, developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, uses the latest gaming technology including virtual reality (VR) technology, allowing players to view, interact and understand complex climate data, thereby improving people's awareness of climate change issues.PlayStation 5 users can experience the "Meteorological Archives" with 4K high-definition image quality visual effects on 4K TVs and explore rich climate information; and the immersive experience brought by PlayStation VR2 also allows the originally complex and obscure climate data to be presented in a more vivid and intuitive way.

"Meteorological Archives" has now been launched on PS5 and PS VR2 platforms, and is open to players around the world for free. This application is divided into three major modules: meteorology, observation and prediction. It tells the story of climate change in a diverse way, and also has an explanation library for users to explore independently.

In the Year Meteorological Module, users will have a preliminary understanding of the complex and interrelated meteorological systems on the earth through visual exploration of meteorological events in 2019.

The Observation Module brings together 120 years of climate data, covering detailed temperature records at thousands of locations around the world, depicting the process of the planet's progressive warming.

In the prediction module, users can use the latest climate model data certified by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to explore the potential impacts of different decisions on climate change and the future of the planet before the end of this century.

"Meteorological Archives" also has an explanation library section, providing 90 minutes of multimedia content to vividly explain the relevant knowledge about climate change.

"Meteorological Archives" not only allows players to use it comfortably in their homes, but also can be applied to scientific research and educational scenarios. As an interactive science tool, it can transform complex climate data into immersive experiences. The data used in the Meteorological Archives are from the most authoritative professional institutions in the field, including NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Berkeley Earth, the Centre for Climate Research at the University of East Anglia (CRU) and the World Climate Research Program (WCRP).

In addition, Sony Interactive Entertainment also specially invited senior meteorologist Laura Tobin to serve as project consultant and serve as a narrator in the video of "Meteorological Archives".

“As a meteorologist, I have been working on weather and climate-related coverage for a long time. Over the past two decades, I have witnessed the continued rise in the frequency and intensity of severe weather around the world. More and more records have been broken, and these events have often occurred in remote areas in the past, and now they are gradually approaching our living environment. I am extremely proud to be able to participate in the Meteorological Archives collaborative project. We hope that users can learn more about this magical planet, intuitively perceive climate change with the most cutting-edge science and technology, and truly understand why we must act.” — Laura Tobin, meteorologist and TV weather forecast host.

Understanding the true situation of climate change is not easy, and the Meteorological Archives aims to give the public hope for the future of the planet and the actions that humans can take. The Meteorological Archives is just our latest move to inspire change and drive progress. We are still committed to achieving Sony Group's "Road to Zero" environmental plan, including a number of measures including the commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040, continuous improvement of the energy efficiency of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 hosts, and the gradual shift of data centers toward renewable energy power.

“Bringing climate awareness to millions of homes through games will help promote public awareness and action on climate change issues, jointly addressing the triple Earth crisis of climate change, natural and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste. The way to transform scientific knowledge into interactive gaming experiences is refreshing. We look forward to seeing players’ responses to this new tool, and highly acknowledge the leading role of Sony Interactive Entertainment in integrating climate science into the global console gaming sector.”—Susan Gardner, Director of the Ecosystem Division of the United Nations Environment Programme

We sincerely thank all our partners for joining hands with us to help the smooth implementation of the "Meteorological Archives" project. We look forward to players who can personally experience the Meteorological Archives, learn more about the scientific principles behind climate change, and explore their own climate stories.
