Riot Games canceled the multi-year project Hytale and laid off employees at Hypixel Studio.
In 2015, Riot funded the developer team of Minecraft multi-player Hypixel to develop a new work, and officially acquired the studio in 2020.
"Hytale" is a sandbox game that uses programs to generate a fantasy world. The work is inspired by Hypixel servers, including various mini games and RPG combat systems for boss battles and dungeon exploration. It also plans to launch a code system to support players in building their own servers and create new materials.
Although the market expectations are high, Riot eventually decided to cancel "Hytale" because the project scale was out of control.
Noxy, CEO of Hypixel Studios, officially confirmed the project to be terminated: "We have stopped Hytale's development and will gradually shut down the studio in the next few months. Technical ambitions have led to a surge in complexity, and even after restarting the game engine, the team still found that the development progress was far from expected. To achieve a grand gaming vision, it obviously took a long time cycle far beyond the estimated."
Riot has reportedly cut about 150 employees of Hypixel Studios. It is not clear whether Riot Games will restart the Hytale project in the future or turn to other business directions.
