In the first two months of this year, Nintendo shipped the vast majority of Switch 2 consoles it made in Vietnam to the United States, given the increasingly close tariff threats that Trump has identified.
Data released by Bloomberg shows that in January and February this year, more than one million Switch 2 game consoles made in Vietnam arrived in the United States.
Data obtained from customs records also showed that in the last few months of 2024, only a small percentage of Switch 2 consoles made in Vietnam were shipped to the United States, and in January this year, Nintendo shipped all Switch 2 consoles made in Vietnam to the United States.
Bloomberg said Vietnam's production accounts for about one-third of the total Nintendo Switch 2 production, but its larger share of production still comes from China.
As of Thursday, April 10, the United States has decided to postpone the tariff threats imposed on multiple countries around the world for at least 90 days. But at the same time, Trump has become increasingly fierce in the trade war with China - as of this writing, China will face 145% tariffs.
Accordingly, Nintendo tried to ship as many Vietnam-made Switch 2 consoles to the United States before the tariffs were implemented.
Earlier this week, David Cole, founder of DFC Intelligence, a marketing and research firm in the gaming industry, said that while Nintendo temporarily suspended Switch 2 pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada, his company expects Nintendo to stick to the Switch 2 starting price of $450.
"We expect Nintendo to stick to a $450 price, and we believe that this pricing is determined when the tariff threat already exists," Cole said.
Bloomberg's report also expressed similar views."If the tariffs are maintained at 10%, Nintendo will likely maintain a $450 price, but profits will be affected. If a 46% tariff is imposed on Vietnam (Trump's initial tariff plan for Vietnam has been suspended at present), I expect them to raise the price by $50 to $100."
Earlier this month, the U.S. trade group Entertainment Software Association said the Trump administration’s tariffs would have a “tangible and harmful impact on the entire video game industry.”
