A European citizen initiative called "Stop destroying video games" has collected more than 420,000 signatures and the number continues to increase. The online petition requires game publishers to ensure that the game is still playable when it stops support.Last year, "The Cool Car God" was unable to play after the server was shut down. Many of the new games require online connection or authentication to play, such as "Diablo 4", which made players worry about its future.
It is understandable that developers and publishers terminate support for old games, but some games are completely unplayable after losing support, leaving buyers unable to access the games they have purchased. For example, after Ubisoft's "Cool Car God" shut down its servers last year, buyers could no longer play, but they could not get a refund.
Accursed Farms, a well-known oil pipe owner, launched a campaign to call on publishers to stop "destroying" the game. The petition calls for "preventing publishers from disabling video games by remote means and prior to this, providing reasonable ways to continue operating these video games without relying on publishers".
The petition does not require the game server to be online indefinitely, which is not realistic, but it is necessary to make sure the game is still playable when the server is offline.Currently, the signatures have exceeded 420,000, with the goal of reaching 1 million. If successful, it will be considered by the European Commission.
