The latest version of Windows 11 24H2 removes support for up to third-generation Intel processors (8th, 9th, and 10th generation Core), but this is aimed at OEM manufacturers and does not affect DIY Windows 11 PC users. That said, now anyone who buys an OEM system should consider buying at least the 12th-generation Core or higher processor.
This means that after Microsoft enforces, any newer OEM machine equipped with these processors will not be able to get the Windows 11 24H2 update, which may cause difficulties for OEMs.However, users who already own these chips can still get the latest Windows 11 updates.
In a recent Microsoft statement, it excludes all OEM systems based on Intel's 8th, 9th and 10th generation processors from the Windows 11 version 24H2 support list. This is strange because Intel's 8th, 9th and 10th generation CPUs all support TPM 2.0, which is the hardware-based security feature required for Windows 11.Despite this, Microsoft suddenly decided that they only support Intel's 12th generation and newer processors.
This update does not mean that any user running these CPUs will not be able to run Windows 11 on their OEM system, or their system will not be able to apply newer updates and patches, but it means that if they buy these chips from now onFor OEM PCs, they may no longer be able to get the latest Windows updates, as OEM vendors will not be able to provide them with the Windows 11 24H2 version.
It's still shocking to see updates like this, as the 10th generation was released around 2019-2020 and is eligible for running Windows 11.
Microsoft said it will only support processors that comply with the "security and reliability design principles" to run the latest version of Windows 11.Meanwhile, it also adds various new models of processors from Intel and AMD to the list.
Windows 11 24H2 will support AMD's 8000 series processors (desktop and Pro mobile series), and the following are compatible models:
