EA reorganizes BioWare's weight loss team size only focuses on Mass Effect 5

EA is shrinking BioWare as the studio turns all its might toward Mass Effect 5.

BioWare general manager Gary McKay said in a blog post that the studio is undergoing a restructuring after "Dragon Age: The Guardian of Shadow" is released at the end of 2024.He said that since the next Mass Effect game does not require "the entire studio support", an unknown number of BioWare employees have been transferred to other teams at the parent company EA.

McKay said: “Now that Dragon Age: The Guardian of Shadows is on sale, BioWare’s core team is developing the next Mass Effect game, led by veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley and others.

To strengthen our commitment to innovate in the development and delivery of Mass Effect, we constantly challenge ourselves to think deeply about how to provide the best experience for our fans.We are taking advantage of this time between the full development cycle to reimagine how we work at BioWare.

Given the current development phase, we do not need support from the entire studio.BioWare has incredible talent, so we have been working hard over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with open positions from other EA teams that are perfect for them."

According to IGN, the Dragon Age team has a few jobs terminated, and it is not clear how many BioWare employees are facing potential layoffs, but affected employees are allegedly able to apply for other positions within the company if they wish.

McKay's statement concluded: "Today's news will make BioWare a more flexible and focused studio to create memorable RPGs. We thank you for your support as we build a new future for BioWare."
